Monograph by Piotr Chmielowski (1848-1904), characterizing the development of intellectual life in the Lithuanian and Ruthenian areas between 1815 and 1823, with particular emphasis on the influence on the work of Adam Mickiewicz. "Chmielowski meticulously collected and dissected all the written manifestations of this movement, the expression of which were the associations established at that time, quite numerous periodicals, pamphlets and a plentiful harvest of collections of poetry by a whole group of verse writers. On the basis of the material collected from these sources, he has reconstructed a richly detailed picture of the mental life of Lithuania in the years when the youthful genius of the singer of "Dziady", "Grazyna" and "Ode to Youth" was developing, during his stay in Vilna and Kaunas .(from the preface)
